Robert Eric Shoemaker explained his Spanish translation project at the AWP Kansas City. He explained, “The Lorca Book is a hybrid-genre work of translation, poetry, biography, literary theory, and auto-theory written in conversation with Federico García Lorca.” I was immediately drawn in.
Shoemaker is a poet whose work explores art, translation, and queer identity. He approaches his translation with his academic experience and technique. He wrote, “I intentionally blur translation and original writing as well as genre boundaries in order to more nearly approximate the relationship that translation is between a translator and their poet.” This is a great introduction to the mythical and beautiful work of Federico García Lorca translated by Shoemaker.
