An Introduction to Brynn Saito by Traci Brimhall

Brynn Saito’s “First Lines” and “Last Lines” weave together imperatives, fragments, and questions to create a mosaic of prayer. In these lines, the mystic trembles next to the animal, and sometimes is what’s animal in us. Line by line, the movements shimmer and resonate, and sometimes within a line, like how a crane can rise from a ditch like a letter. Saito’s lyric leaps create surprises that both astonish and yet somehow feel inevitable. But her lines are more than pleasures. They’re a form of seeking, of not just searching for the right words but creating language where none exists in order to speak to the world, to summon an intimacy that hasn’t yet spoken itself into being.
