The pebbles in my pocket by Florence Lenaers

quotations from a long ago field trip

pebbles of bone & milk drops of rounded

geology looking like tiny tiny—

pebbles worn by water ice & sand

just like the dancer warming up

up & down up & down up &—

        support your body weight on

        the tips of your toes

before the première before the limno-

logists break into applause before the

crème brûlée sugar crust breaks—

smooth pebbles as smooth as a cathedral

of bones and flesh hovering over piano

keys, fingertips unlocking—
